Running on Substack | December updates
Showcasing inspiring writers & this month’s updated Running on Substack Directory
Welcome to the holiday edition of Running on Substack. Discover new running enthusiasts here on Substack.
This month, I’m spreading a little seasonal cheer by spotlighting some of my favorite writers in our running community — creators whose words inspire, challenge, and brighten the everyday. Consider this a curated gift list of voices worth reading, celebrating, and sharing as we wrap up the year.
Featured Substackers from Our Community
Mike Hahn with Running Lightly
Mike’s writing continues to inspire me every time he posts……he writes about more than running. I would describe his writing as an intersection between living and running. Mike explores running as a path to personal growth, joy, and deeper self-connection. Through his own stories and experiences, he focuses on presence, process, and resilience. If you are looking to start running, reconnect with the joy of movement, or want to just simply follow along with Mike as he navigates life through the lens of running. His most recent post on his five-years of sobriety covers his journey to taking the “leap” with his wife and how this momentous process “transformed” his running life.
Chris Z of the Das Z Letter - Running, Culture and Self
Chris writes about running and a lot of other topics related to running - injuries, industry, music, motivation, culture and more. Some of my favorite posts cover his journey with being injured and how he intersects running and music.
In his post below, he writes about what it means to support his friend at the 2025 Tor des Géants:
Brittany Vermeer of Triple Threat Life
Triple Threat Life is mostly about triathlons but Brittany Vermeer writes about more than training for triathlons including mental performance, hydration, nutrition. Follow Brittany and her husband as they prepare for all the aspects of training for both short and longer-distance triathlons. One of my favorite pieces (hard to pick just one) is this post about the connection between sodium and carbohydrates:
Craig Lewis with Running Tales: After all is said and run
I love stories about everyday runners, new runners, struggling runners, back of the pack runners, runners running for a cause. Craig and Michelle Lewis provide all that and more from all over the world. You can listen to Running Tales on YouTube and the usual audio channels. Visit their website here.
Below, Chris interviews Andy Goldsby, a former rock-and-roll star who now directs the Arrow Valley parkrun and also hosts a podcast himself. Read (or listen) to Andy’s story below.
Niki Micallef with Born on the Trail
As Niki writes, Born on the Trail is a space shaped by the big questions and curiosities that surface on his long runs and in conversations with fellow runners. He explores the science, research, and real-world experience behind trail and ultra-running, sharing what he learns in a practical, usable way. Each post offers clear takeaways to help runners train smarter, avoid missteps, and better understand your own running. Besides offering his posts on Substack for free, Niki also offers a podcast (also available on YouTube). He is also actively on Instagram and Facebook.
In his interview below, Niki talks to Scott Johnston on muscular endurance training in his debut podcast of Born on the Trail: Going Longer. Scott was the coach of Ruth Croft and Tom Evans, UTMB winners in 2025.
